Surf · Skate · Street Culture · Retro Tropical

The Surf Motel project was crafted in close collaboration with the owner, whose brand spans surf-skate-street culture, a clothing line, a surf school, and music production. The brief was to translate that raw, authentic energy into a boutique hotel interior that felt genuinely lived-in rather than designed-for-design's-sake.

The interior employs retro warmth through medium-to-dark rich woods paired with bold pops of indigo navy — a deliberate counterpoint to the property's existing brutalist concrete architecture. The result is a layered, textural space that softens the structure while anchoring it in character.

Drawing on California and European design sensibilities adapted to Bali's tropical context, the lobby and common areas channel a 1960s "Mad Men" atmosphere — lush vegetation, water features, and vintage audio equipment creating an ambiance that feels timeless. Each furniture piece was selected or custom-made to reinforce the brand's identity: tactile, unpretentious, and deeply connected to surf culture.
